Frank symbolizes freedom for Eveline. The elopement and new life he offers represents complete change from Eveline's old life. Frank appears to symbolize all things good that Eveline could have. However, Frank's essence also could frighten Eveline. She knows nothing different from the life she possesses. Although it appears senseless to the reader for Eveline not to escape the threats of her abusive father, the girl is not viewing her life objectively. Eveline sees leaving her home as the ultimate betrayal to her mother's last wish. When one examines Eveline's love for her mother, they can perhaps understand why she is so hesitant to leave her family.

I agree with bekaht12 in that Frank symbolizes freedom for Eveline. Going with him could give her a completely different and new life. She could essentialy get away from her father and the lifestyle she has known her whole life. But leaving this known lifestyle is scary to Eveline. She has been around the same environment her whole life. I think that she chooses not to go with Frank to Buenos Aires because she is afraid to leave behind the lifestyle she is most comfortable with and her father. She also made a promise to her mother that she needs to keep. She cannot leave her family behind for Frank.

Frank is Eveline's escape and freedom. He has the ability to take her away to foreign lands, to places she has never been, to the unknown. Naturally, "the unknown", in any aspect of life, is at least somewhat frightening. One does not know what it contains, what lies beyond those walls of comfort. This is one of the reasons Eveline chooses not to accompany Frank on his voyage. She knows nothing outside of the comfort and the protection of her father and her home (disregarding the fact that he has threatened her on, as we may conclude, several occasions). Aside from this, Eveline made a promise to her mother before she died: that she would "keep the home together as long as she could." And this is her other restraint, for the abandonment of her home requires the betrayal of her mother, and that she cannot do.

As mentioned above, I believe Frank symbolizes freedom and a new life for Eveline. Eveline has to juggle many jobs to support her dad. In the process, her dad is sometimes very abusive. Frank provides an escape from this life for Eveline, but when it came down to the final decision, Eveline could not make herself go with Frank to Buenos Aires. Eveline possibly stayed for a number of reasons. First, she promised her mother to maintain the home. Then Eveline begins remembering her childhood life when her mother was still alive. That was a great time in Eveline's life, and she feels attached to it. She then realizes her present life could be worse, and it is not so bad.

As the other have mentioned,Frank symbolizes freedom for Eveline. Eveline desired a new life for herself. She wanted to leave her father and the terrible lifestyle, and Frank was her ticket out. Yet, when it was time for her to leave she did not. She could not leave her father and brother to take care of theirselves. She had made a promise and that is why she stayed. At first it did not make any sense on staying in a bad enviroment, but it was her love for her family that forced her to stay.

Frank symbolizes change, escape, freedom, and opportunity. Eveline is afraid of change and would rather serve others than be served. However the epiphany she has toward the end of the story, is that she must stay to take care of her family and not break the promise she made to her mother.

I agree with everyone in that Frank symbolizes freedom and a new beginning for Eveline. She is accustomed to serving everyone else and taking care of them, but Frank is willing to let her drop those responsibilities and be taken care of by him. I believe there are multiple reasons why she chooses not to leave with Frank. One is she still feels obligated to take care of her family and home. Her mother's final wish was for her to continue to watch over everything. Another reason why she may have chose to stay is that she is so used to being a guardian that it feels wrong to leave. She is torn between two options and chooses the least appealing one according to most readers.

Frank definitely symbolizes escape and change for Eveline. He is the way for her to get out of the abusive relationship with her father, and out of the stressful, tiring life that she has been living. Frank is exciting and kind, nothing like her father. If Eveline goes with Frank, everything will change for her. I think that change would benefit her greatly, however, she is scared. She wants change and escape so bad, yet she's terrified of it! All she has ever known is the terrible life she has had. She has never experienced anything else, so the familiarity of her old life is comforting. Another reason that I think she stays is because she knows she does not really love Frank.

In this story, Eveline seems to want change but is too afraid to have it. However, her secret lover Frank tries to persuade Eveline to travel to Buenos Aires with him. This seems like a good idea to Eveline, but ultimately she is too afraid and is obligated to stay with her family. All in all, Frank represents and sybolizes change and an opportunity to get away from her obligations in this story.

As previously stated by other members of the class, Frank is a symbol of freedom, escape, change and hope for something better. However, Eveline has worked herself into a routine of daily life and feels as if she cannot leave this life she has become so accustomed to. Her life, her father, her brother, they are all obligations for her to stay and not go to Buenos Aires with Frank. As we discussed in class, she wants to go but she also wants and feels a cumpuslsion to stay. Being the only daughter of the family and the only child left for her father to truely depend on, I'm sure she feels as if she should stay if not for her father or brother or herself but for her mother.

As most everyone else has stated, Frank symbolizes Eveline's sense of freedom and also her escape. Her busy lifestyle of always managing other peoples' needs has grown her weary, and Frank provides her an oppurtunity to be rid of all that. He also serves as a protective being in her life because her father does not take the role of being protected, but instead chooses to be abusive. I believe she decides to not go with Frank to Buenos Aires because she can not leave her family alone and break the promise she made to her mother about maintianing the home. Her connection with her home keeps her from going with Frank.

Frank symbolizes freedom and opportunity for Eveline. Most of her life, unfortunately, was spent stressed under heavy responsibility. Frank entered her life and offered her an escape to her lifetime predicament. Eveline is torn between leaving for a better life and staying with her present obligations. She feels as though she would be betraying her mother and family. This combined with the fact that she states she had no love for Frank explains why she chose to stay instead of leave for a better life.

Frank is a symbol of freedom for Eveline. If they were to get married and leave then she would not be tied down to taking care of her father no longer. This is what one would think that Eveline would want but she does not want change. For some, change scares them and they want to stay with their basic every day life. Eveline feels the same way. She has become so accustomed to taking care of her father that she does not know anything else but to do so. Even though she is laid with the burden of taking care of him, it is all she can do. She feels the obligation to take care of him and not leave her father. Even though it would be the best thing for her to leave with Frank, it is something that she can not do. She wants the freedom that Frank provides, but she knows that she can not leave.

There doesnt seem much left to say, everyone else has already stated the fact that Frank is freedom and change. I guess you could say she was nervous about not going with him because of what it could possibly have been like; of course the other reasons stated are probably more likely. When they arrived at the port, it was a huge conglomeration of people. Of course the other reasons seem more logical, but is it not possible that she felt that if she followed him to Buenos Aires, that her life would be like is all the time? A never ending chain of people linked back to back like molecules in a solid object. This itself could not be a good enough reason to withdraw from this opportunity of a lifetime, but in combination with the others, it might as well have been the icing on the cake.
